Automated Phased Array Solution for Inspection of Aircraft Engine Outlet Guide Vanes
The aviation industry depends significantly on Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) to ensure the structural integrity of critical aircraft components. While traditional NDT methods are effective, they can be time-consuming and susceptible to human error. The emergence of automated NDT technologies has transformed the field, providing more consistent, reliable, and repeatable results. In the following sections, we introduce a fully Automated NDT Solution featuring advanced scanning capabilities.
Automated Phased Array Solution
This Automated Solution is specifically designed for inspecting aircraft engine Outlet Guide Vanes (OGVs). The system features a 6-axis immersion scanner and two Gimbal/Gimbal manipulators. Scan plans of the OGV parts are directly imported from CAD files to the TecView® NDT software, enabling the acquisition of simultaneous C-Scans in Through-Transmission and Pulse-Echo modes. Results are displayed on the imported 3D model of the OGV parts for detailed analysis. The developed solution also allows advanced contour-following inspections, accommodating arbitrary motion and the curved shapes of OGVs. A crucial step in 3D inspections is validating the scanner’s trajectories. This validation is achieved by comparing the deviation of the water path and probe incidence angle against a predetermined acceptable error. Phased array probes are employed for this solution to reduce inspection time while enhancing reliability and repeatability.
Sample of Inspection Results
To demonstrate the developed phased array solution, an OGV part with curved surface and simulated defects was scanned in immersion setup. The CAD model of the surface to be controlled was used by TecView® software to obtain precise scanning trajectories and ensure thorough coverage of the part, as depicted in the following Figures.
